The Government sends test Emergency Alerts, Here’s what they mean.
The message initially labelled “Emergency Alert: Extreme” was sent in both English and Hindi. It stated the following: “This is a sample test message sent by the Ministry of Telecommunication, Government of India over the Cell Broadcasting System. Please ignore this message as no action is required on your part The message was sent to test the pan-India emergency alert system implemented by the National Disaster Management Authority. The objective is to improve public safety and provide timely warnings in emergency situations.
The message also contains a timestamp that indicates when it was received and sent to various devices, including smartwatches. In the case of the Apple Watch Ultra, there was a text message accompanied by a strong audible alert and vibration. While some users received notifications with a loud sound and vibration, those whose phones were set to silent did not receive the message with an audible sound or vibration. Nevertheless, the system is designed to override the silent mode on the smartphone to alert the user.
Why the news?
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has announced the launch of the Cell Broadcast Alert System. The system aims to provide real-time alerts to citizens in disaster situations like tsunamis, flash floods, earthquakes, landslides etc. The government has taken this initiative to increase public safety in emergency situations.
An official statement released by the Ministry of Communications in July this year said: “In our continued commitment to the safety and security of the citizens of India and the community, the Cell Broadcast Alert System is being tested at every telecommunication service provider.” The existing systems of various mobile operators and cell broadcast systems are tested from time to time in different regions of the country to measure the efficiency and effectiveness of the emergency alert transmission capacity.”

About the Emergency Alert system
According to the ministry, the Cell Broadcast Alert System is a state-of-the-art technology that enables urgent and time-sensitive disaster management messages to be sent to all mobile devices within a specified geographical area, regardless of whether the recipients are residents. or audience.
This system ensures comprehensive and timely dissemination of important emergency information. Government agencies and emergency services use it to warn the public of potential threats and keep them informed in critical situations. Cell broadcasts are frequently used to transmit emergency alerts, including severe weather warnings, public safety messages, evacuation orders and other important updates, the statement added.
Throughout the experiment, individuals will receive simulated emergency alerts on their mobile devices. The ministry has earlier assured that these test alerts “do not indicate a genuine emergency” and will be clearly marked as “Sample Test Notification” to avoid confusion.
